Dog problem in Esto
To The Editor:
While our Vacation Bible School was going on, I went out to the front of the church just to check on things while our leaders were playing with the children out behind the church and some in class teaching.
As I stepped out the doors I noticed two dogs coming down the sidewalk (which unfortunately isn’t out of the norm), but what caused me to get a little more concerned than normal is that one of the dogs was a pit bulldog. When the dogs got behind the cars parked in our churchyard, I lost sight of them. At that point they must have decided to cross Highway 79, and in the process the bulldog ended up getting hit by a car.
The car kept going, and the dog ran off the road back towards the church. At that point I yelled out to a lady in the parking lot not to get out of her car because injured animals can do odd things. I proceeded to run through the church to the back, and immediately ordered our leaders to bring the children back inside as a safety measure.
The dog ended up being okay, and turned out to be friendly, but that isn’t always the case. As a dad, pastor, and citizen I am very concerned about the dog problem in Holmes County. Just four days ago I looked out my bedroom window while opening the blinds, and saw a stray dog running up my driveway. You may not find that odd, but it happens regularly and there are only two or three houses within a mile of my place.
I have come home to find dogs lying on my porch at least four times, and one of the times they growled and came at me. I had to go to a neighbor’s house to borrow a gun in order to get them away from the house. Another day when my kids were out in the yard a large Rottweiller and German shepherd came up the driveway which as you can imagine caused a lot of concern. Please pray for and encourage our county leaders to take steps towards fixing our stray dog problems.
